Abstract

This paper analyses apocalyptic fition in its various forms from three historical moments: the conception of Zarathustra, the inheritance of this perspective in Christian millenarianism and present-day science fition. In this way, apocalypse is presented as a flxible myth, taking on diffrent meanings, but maintaining an essential basis in a dual structure of destruction and regeneration. From this perspective, the philosophical contributions of Frank Kermode, Krisham Kumar and Malcolm Bull are addressed to argue that the apocalypse is a fition that provides structure and meaning to our history. In other words, it indicates a fi nality to the direction of human’s history and the meaning of our existence, since in its traditional dual structure it presents an end to the chaotic world, which is always followed by a transformation to a perfect state, providing us with an escape from our complex reality.
