Abstract

This text shares some Mapuche reflections on the prayer service that takes place in March in the Mapuche community of "Monguel Mamuell," located in the province of Río Negro, Argentina. This Nguillatun (prayer service), which bears the Mapuche name Wiñoy Rimu, translates as "autumn cycle" and invites us to take a "break" from reading and interpreting the signs generated by what we know as the weather during this season. In anthropological fieldwork, this prayer service invites us to unravel the meanings and concepts that acquire different connotations through other, "unhurried" dialogues between the worlds above and the one we tread upon, the world below, signs from ancestors, omens, gods, ngen, and nature. "Here we do traful" means "to each other," "next to." During the reading we can see how this concept captivates us with its teachings about reconnecting complementary links between human beings, human ancestors and non-humans, linking them, for example, through the change of color of the day in relation to even deeper meanings of lof, lofche, tuwun, pewutuwun, rehue, kuymi, trafquintun.

Author Biography

Víctor Vargas Inostroza, National University of Córdoba (UNC)

He was born in Punta Arenas (Magallanes Region), Mapuche, of the “Antupangui” lineage which means “Lion of the Sun”. He is a Professor, Bachelor and PhD candidate in Anthropology at the National University of Córdoba (UNC), Argentina. He completed his thesis entitled: “Learning to be Mapuche from the moment we wake up until we sleep. An ethnography of the processes of Mapuche (re)communalization in Río Negro”. He is currently a first-year adjunct professor in the Chair of Ethnography of Indigenous Groups in the Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology at the National University of Córdoba (UNC). In 2023, he published the book: “Señales de la Nevada. Procesos de (re)comunalización Mapuche en la Provincia de Río Negro”, Argentina (Editorial HEN, Córdoba). He has three published musical albums: Barcos (2019), Vendaval (2021) and Infinita luz (2023). She is currently participating in the research projects "The Challenges of Interculturalizing Society: Uses, Appropriations, and Tensions" and is part of the Information and Discussion Network on Archaeology and Heritage (RIDAP).
